This Duke Ellington review was written as an essay, and ideally, it would be great to put the same kind of research into every jazz review, as well as provide a thesis for each album. One problem is that many jazz recordings tend to be collections of separate recordings that were not necessarily intended to cohere as albums so it would be hard to posit a ‘thesis’ in those cases. Still, I hope every now and then I can find time to write more jazz essay-reviews.
